Practicality & Chicago's Mood Swings

Chicago is a moody lady. One day she's windy, the next she's cold, and shortly after she embraces you with sunshine. You can't predict her swings and you certainly can't plan for it.

Ask any city dweller how to dress for winter and they'll typically answer with a shrug and a non-descript, "Anything goes". Practicality is a part of our nature; dressing for the weather means layers and over-preparedness.

Cue in: Hunter Boots. Forget checking the weather - throw them on in the morning and they're guaranteed to kick through Chicago's chilly temperament or keep your toes dry through her teardrops. Sometimes I'll even "forget" indoor office shoes and will tromp around in my Hunters all day. Take, for instance, the day that I took the below pictures. While I was preppy top-to-bottom and heels would have been a key addition, I kept my boots on because, well, they were just too comfortable to take off.

I may have even thrown a snowball or two on my walk home, just because I was feeling extra weather-adept. But that's a story for another day.

PS -- I do recognize the irony in discussing practicality while posing outside in the cold snow without a jacket.

PPS -- Isn't That Charming got a new header + side bar! What do you think?

  8. I love the unexpected! the rain boots with the prep is adorable! We have schizo weather in Seattle, too...maybe not all the snow (usually), but definitely wind, rain, sunshine, freezing 30 one day, 60 the next day...so, I have been known to tromp around in my rain boots with the girliest outfits, too ;) Oh! And loving the new look :) Such a great update! XO Brynn

  13. I Love the boots with the outfit. No need to change shoes. I have been wearing my hunters in the non-rainy (but cold) weather because they are just so cute, I can't help it. But in the summer, I sometimes wear flip flops to work and then forget to change my shoes too. I guess it doesn't matter what season it is...I do the same thing!

  24. I'm absolutely swooning over your colour sensibility. You've just got it! The fawn coloured sweater, and the pop of beads at your neckline. You look darling. I tried on a friend's pair of Hunter boots yesterday, so sure they wouldn't fit over my calves, but Eureka!, they did. Here in Vancouver, I really get ample opportunity to wear my wellies!

Lovely blog...thank you so much for popping by mine, and taking the time to comment. I look forward to reading some additional posts.

  30. I'm a new follower. Beautiful blog, and I think your sidebar is perfect. I'm not too far away, over in Michigan, and the weather here is awful too. I'm pretty sure I'd feel better about it if my boots were as adorable as yours, though.
