An Appreciation For Pencil Skirts

When I was younger, I always looked at pencil skirts as "too mature" looking. They reminded me of my mom's work clothing, which I now adore, but back in the day I just didn't get it. I blame all this on my far-too-long "surfer girl" stage in which Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister, and puka shell necklaces were my go-to. (Side note: Why did I think it was acceptable to dress for the beach during Michigan winters?)

Thankfully, that stage is long gone, and I can now appreciate pencil skirts for what they truly are: feminine & versatile. In fact, they're my top pick for when the urge to dress up a little hits me. Ever since I bought this J-Crew skirt last year, it's been one of my favorite wardrobe essentials. Check out this post & this post for other looks. As you can see, I typically wear this skirt with heels, but these booties were the perfect tie-in for cool weather.

  4. So cute! The problem I have with all of my pencil skirts is that they're too big at the top and don't look nearly as chic as yours does. Ahh! Well, I love this and that blue is just gorgeous!

  11. I can totally relate, I always saw pencil skirts as old lady office wear but now I have so many in my closets including a cobalt blue one from J Crew similar to the one you featured. It's fun to pair it with a crop top when going out for drinks.

  13. That skirt fits you like a dream. Do you have trouble finding skirts that are slim enough around the knees? I have a terrific one from Zara but most tend to look more straight-cut on me. I persevere!
